Nataraja (The lord of Dance) is a depiction of the God Shiva as the cosmic dancer who performs his divine dance to destroy a weary universe and make preparations for the God Brahma, the creator, to start the process of creation. Shiva was first depicted as Nataraja in the famous Chola bronzes and sculptures of Chidambaram. Shiva in Nataraja posture is a very common image throughout India.
What is interesting about this painting is that, it portrays God Ganesh, son of Shiva in the Nataraja posture. An image, that is so commonly linked to Shiva.
