“Inside/Outside” is a portrait about ambiguity, stemming from inner conflict and indecision. Is the subject pressing through the canvas barrier in an attempt to reach a warm, well-lit reality? Or is she pushing herself away from us, into a dark abyss? Both of these explanations are possible, perhaps even simultaneously. Although the canvas becomes a pane of glass offering the viewer a glimpse inside one’s thoughts, introspection is a complex process that can remain mysterious even to its ruminating subject, much less to the outside world.
